College Prep Night – Meeting will be held in the SHS Cafeteria
There will be a College Prep Night offered for Parents and Students (Juniors and Seniors) on Monday, September 9th from 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Sycamore High School in the Cafeteria. We will give an overview of the Naviance program that students use for career interest inventories, college searches, transcript requests, resumes, and more. Juniors will hear a presentation about applying to college/finding a right fit school while seniors receive information about paying for college and applying for the FAFSA.
The Word of the Year – CONNECT
Throughout the year, SHS’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) committee has chosen to focus on the theme CONNECT for our student body. We all know what a difference it makes in people’s lives to feel connected and so we want to encourage our students to find and make positive connections to others. This overriding theme will connect various activities planned throughout the year that focus on topics such as suicide awareness, anitbullying, disability awareness, mental health and other topics.
September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month and therefore we will be meeting with all students to discuss this topic. Most of this will take place at the beginning of the orientation sessions for each grade during Spartan Stretch this month. Because freshmen will not have their orientation presentations until October, we plan to visit each freshmen English class in September to address the topic of suicide. As part of this presentation, all students and staff will be given a bracelet with the word CONNECT on it – as a reminder of our theme for the year. On the inside of the bracelets, students and staff can find the crisis phone and text lines.
At our school, many of us have been impacted by the loss of students as well as friends and family due to suicide. We know that addressing the topic of suicide is so important and yet we also realize that it can trigger emotions for many of us. We want everyone to be aware that the support staff at SHS (school counselors, social workers, nurse, school psychologist, school resource officer, and other staff) are available for students to discuss this important topic and process through thoughts, feelings, and ideas about suicide in our school, community and world.
