Sycamore Community School District 427 Expands Student Opportunities with Addition of Girls Flag Football

Sycamore Community School District 427 is one step closer to offering Girls Flag Football as a new extracurricular opportunity for Sycamore High School students. During its July 21 meeting, the Board of Education discussed the addition of the program and its associated coaching positions, with final approval anticipated following the hiring of coaches later this summer.

The addition reflects the district's continued commitment to expanding extracurricular opportunities that encourage student involvement, build school pride, and provide meaningful experiences beyond the classroom.

The recommendation was developed through the District's Extracurricular Opportunities Committee, a group established to evaluate extracurricular programming using a review process that considers student interest, participation trends, staffing needs, operational impacts, and financial responsibility. The committee includes district administrators, building principals, athletic leadership, and coaching representatives.

Girls Flag Football has experienced rapid growth across Illinois, creating new opportunities for female student-athletes to compete, develop leadership skills, and represent their schools. The new program will include both a Head Coach and Assistant Coach beginning this fall.

“Expanding athletic opportunities to align with student interest and statewide growth is a top priority for our district,” said Dr. Kristen Campbell, Superintendent. “The addition of Girls Flag Football reflects our commitment to providing inclusive, engaging programs that empower our female student-athletes. We are excited to welcome this new team to Spartan athletics."

The idea for Girls Flag Football began with one student's passion for the game. Sycamore High School sophomore Allison Densberger, who currently competes on the boys football team, approached district leadership about creating a girls program. Her advocacy helped demonstrate local interest and ultimately contributed to the recommendation to expand athletic opportunities for female student-athletes. If approved, Allison looks forward to trading in her tackle football gear to become a member of Sycamore's inaugural Girls Flag Football team.

"I think this adds so much to my Spartan experience because I get to help other girls get involved in a sport they might have never tried," said Densberger. "I'm meeting people I probably wouldn't have talked to otherwise, and it's really cool knowing we're part of history by starting the first girls flag football team at Sycamore. I'm grateful to Mr. Carrick, Mr. Reineck, and Dr. Campbell for helping make this opportunity possible."

Mr. Chauncey Carrick, Director of Athletics & Activities, believes the program will complement the district's existing athletic offerings while welcoming new student-athletes into Spartan athletics. “We are very excited to be adding Girls Flag Football to our athletic program at Sycamore High School,” said Mr. Chauncey Carrick, Director of Athletics & Activities. “This opportunity will give a new group of students the chance to compete as a team and develop skills that will help make them successful members of our community long past their days here at Sycamore High School.”

The first year of the program will be supported through a combination of private donations, Sports Boosters contributions, and grant opportunities, allowing startup and implementation costs to be funded through external sources. The district's anticipated first-year investment is limited to coaching stipends totaling $14,000. Beginning in the second year, the district anticipates annual operating costs of approximately $26,000, with continued support from Sports Boosters for certain program expenses. The addition of Girls Flag Football aligns with the district's commitment to expanding opportunities for students to explore their interests, strengthen connections within the school community, and develop the skills that prepare them for success both on and off the field.

Students interested in participating in Girls Flag Football during the inaugural 2026-2027 season will receive additional information regarding registration, preseason meetings, and practice schedules from the Sycamore High School Athletic Department in the coming weeks.
