Built in 1988, the Sycamore High School greenhouse has housed a plant sale every year, and this year will be no different. Students in the Horticulture and Advanced Horticulture classes at SHS plant and care for the plants during school days and weekends.
"The students learn valuable skills including responsibility, decision making, and dedication. They also assist with the plant sales and learn how to communicate with customers about prices and tips for plant care,” said Courtney Wiedenmann, FFA advisor and agriculture teacher at SHS.
Students learn new skills by hosting the plant sale, but the community also benefits — parents, students, and community members can take home their own vegetables, herbs, and other plants while supporting the horticulture program at SHS. In turn, students within the program may obtain jobs within the horticulture industry of Sycamore.
This year, the plant sale will have a variety of vegetables, herbs, fruits, perennials, and annual plants for sale. Along with your yearly favorites, you will find new additions including watermelon, melon, sweet banana pepper, squash, and the polk-a-dot plant!
The plant sale opens to the public on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, from 3:00-6:00 PM and is located at 427 Spartan Trail, Sycamore, IL 60178, on the south side of campus near the bus barn. There will also be a petting zoo while you shop for plants!
